This month, our Chairman Roger Rudderham has chosen his Item of the Month as an old 19th Century pistol.

The pistol was discovered buried just off Parson’s Lane, Littleport. It was found close to the surface and all wrapped up in hessian cloth.

The pistol, which is badly damaged and therefore deactivated, was donated to the Society some years ago, and has become a popular artefact at exhibitions.

The pistol is relatively small, weighing 394g and is just 21cm (8.25″) long from butt end to barrel end.

Mystery

The gun’s owner remains a mystery and we’ll never know why it was buried there seemingly so carefully. Were they hiding it after a crime, or in anticipation of needing a pistol for some reason at a later date? It also begs the question of; why did they not return to collect it?
