Description

Note: This is a used book, sold as seen. The binding is strong, and the dust jacket is in good condition although has some worn corners. The dust jacket is also attached to the book by a Christmas present gift sticker on the inside cover, which reads “To Mollie, from Jim and Ann with all good wishes for a happy new year”.

The blurb reads:
“This interesting and informative book from the pen of Mr R. R. Sowerby, Winton, Kirkby Stephen, will be found to be well worth its price, for the author is a solicitor by occupation, and behind it all is a mine of information, for he has a profound knowledge of North Westmorland and its ancient history and traditions, which he handles with great literary ability.

This book is a larger edition of an earlier publication, which was well received by the public and press, not only in Westmorland, but far beyond its borders. Indeed it is three and a half times the size of its predecessor, and includes sixty-five beautiful illustrations from the author’s own photographs. It also contains five maps covering nearly all the county of Westmorland, on which are marked most of the ancient monuments, prehistoric settlements, earthworks, and Roman remains.

The old Feudal Castles, Manor Houses, and Pele Towers are fully described and splendidly illustrated, especially the old Pele Tower at Yanwath Hall, said to be the best example of its kind in Westmorland.

This book ought to have its place in the libraries and rucksacs of all who wish to rediscover the Westmorland moors and dales with their evidence of old-time civilisations. It is well written, amply illustrated, and competently mapped and any adventurers into these historical or prehistorical corners of the North, cannot afford to be without what will be found to be very complete guide and a very informative friend. – T. Sarginson”
